Coronation Street
It was refreshing to see recently on one of the longest running TV soaps, a story about mediation. In most situations, mediation has to be considered before an application can be made to court about a family matter. Happily, the show recognised this and a separating couple attended mediation – BUT with the new partner of one of the parties!! This is not true to life – we all know that there are some aspects of soapland that are unbelievable (how many deaths in one small village??) but this was misleading.
Mediation is private and attended only by those people directly involved, usually parents. Don’t feel concerned that third parties are able to attend and let’s be honest interfere and usually make a difficult situation much worse.
